Quotes in Freedom Flag

Creating the illusion of folds in a flag using only magazines pages was a challenge for me in my collage, “Freedom Flag”.  This is one of those pieces I needed to keep walking across the room to see if it was doing what I needed it to do.  Placing a dark grey paper in a white strip looked off close up, but from a distance it looks like a shadow.  I just had to have faith that it would all make sense.


I wanted to add meaning and to reflect our nation's history.  So to keep with the theme, I illustrated the idea of “shore to shore” by adding shots of the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate bridge.  I even included a shot of Yellowstone Falls that I took on my last vacation. I then added quotes from Presidents and other influential leaders throughout U.S. history, focusing on the idea of the freedoms that our county was built upon.  You’ll find quotes from:

• Abraham Lincoln
• Susan B. Anthony
• Thomas Jefferson
• Dwight D. Eisenhower
• Benjamin Franklin

I also add bits and pieces from political articles and parts of the U.S. Constitution.  I wouldn't think that this topic would be controversial, but in our current political climate, folks may read into this depending on their point of view.  I attempted to tap into both sides. So, am I trying to say something?  Perhaps I am.
